About Finding Dorothy
Finding Dorothy by Elizabeth Letts was one of my favorite books that I read in 2020. I devoured this book as soon as I got my hands on it. It was everything I love about historical fiction books.
Finding Dorothy is a fictionalized account of the real life story of Maud Gage Baum, the wife of L. Frank Baum, and her experience on the set of The Wizard of Oz. This book was well-researched and the story-telling drew me in from the very beginning.
The book alternates between two stories. First, there is the story of Maud’s life from growing up deep in the women’s suffrage movement through her marriage with L. Frank Baum. Then, you get the story of the filming of the movie, The Wizard of Oz and well as the friendship that evolved between Maud and Judy Garland. The two stories weave together beautifully.
I truly loved this book. Maud was fascinating as was the story behind the book and behind the movie. I loved getting a glimpse of Judy Garland as a teenager and reading about her friendship with Maud. I could not put this book down!
This book is perfect for readers who love biographical fiction as well as those who grew up loving The Wizard of Oz. It’s a beautiful homage to the books and the movie.
